Cotton has no stretch and presses flat, which is why quilters prefer it; use polyester for garments that will be stressed. The thread weight chart lists every line with its weight, needle and best use.
Frequently asked questions
Aurifil 50 or Mettler Silk-Finish 50 for piecing?
Both are long-staple 50-weight cottons that piece beautifully; Aurifil is a 2-ply and slightly finer, Mettler a 3-ply and slightly stronger. Pick by the color you need.
Can I use 50-weight cotton in the bobbin?
Yes — matching top and bobbin is the simplest tension setup. 60-weight in the bobbin reduces bulk for dense quilting.
