Interfacing, stabilizers and batting
Interfacing for garments and bags from Pellon and HeatnBond; embroidery stabilizers from OESD and DIME; structural foam and fleece from Bosal, Pellon and ByAnnie for bags; and quilt batting from The Warm Company, Hobbs, Bliss and Pellon in cotton, 80/20 cotton-poly, wool, bamboo and polyester. Most lines are sold by the yard or by the pre-cut package; the page states which. Cut yardage is not returnable, so check the width and weight before ordering.

Picking interfacing and batting
Interfacing is chosen by weight and by whether it fuses. Featherweight and lightweight fusibles for collars and facings on blouses; medium-weight woven fusibles (Pellon Shape-Flex, HeatnBond Woven) for shirting and quilting-cotton garments; heavyweight and Peltex for bag bases and hat brims; fusible fleece and the foam products (Bosal In-R-Form, Pellon Flex-Foam, ByAnnie Soft and Stable) for bags that need to hold a shape.
Stabilizers are chosen by the embroidery and the fabric. Cut-away for knits and anything stretchy, tear-away for stable wovens, wash-away for freestanding lace and sheer fabrics, and a sticky-backed stabilizer for items that cannot be hooped. Weight follows the stitch density of the design.
Batting is chosen by loft and fiber. 100% cotton (Warm & Natural, Hobbs Tuscany Cotton) is low-loft, drapes well and shrinks slightly for the traditional crinkle; 80/20 cotton-poly (Hobbs Heirloom, Pellon) is the all-rounder with a little more loft and less shrinkage; wool is the warmest and best for showing off quilting; bamboo blends are soft and cool; polyester is the lightest, cheapest and washes hardest. Check the recommended quilting distance on the package — it varies from 2 to 10 inches between lines.
Batting is sold by the yard off a bolt or as pre-cut crib, twin, queen and king packages; by-the-yard orders are cut to length and not returnable.
Frequently asked questions
What batting for a baby quilt?
100% cotton or 80/20 — both wash well and are low-loft. Pre-cut crib packages are the easiest buy.
Cut-away or tear-away stabilizer?
Cut-away for knits, fleece and anything stretchy; tear-away for stable woven cotton and linen. When unsure, cut-away is the safer choice.
Can I return interfacing cut by the yard?
No — cut yardage is not returnable. Pre-cut packages can be returned unopened within 30 days.
