Notions and tools

The small tools sewing depends on: pins and clips from Taylor Seville (Magic Pins), Clover (Wonder Clips) and Dritz; marking pens, chalk and Chaco liners; seam rippers, point turners and stilettos; measuring tapes and gauges; pressing sprays and starches from Mary Ellen (Best Press); scissors and snips from Kai and Havel's; thread stands, spool pins and bobbin holders; and Tula Pink's hardware collection. Items that attach to a specific machine — spool pins, thread guides — name the models they fit.

What is worth buying

Pins should match the fabric: fine 0.5 mm glass-head pins for quilting cotton and silks (they survive the iron), ballpoint pins for knits, longer flat-head pins for layers and bulky seams. Magic Pins are sold by use — patchwork, quilting, appliqué, silk — and the name tells you the length and thickness.

Clips replace pins on bag work, vinyl, leather and binding, where a pin would leave a hole or not go through. Wonder Clips and Magic Clips come in small for binding and large for thick seams.

For marking, a heat-erasable pen is fast but can ghost back in the cold; Chaco liners brush off; water-erasable pens are the safe choice on fabric that will be washed. Test on a scrap of the fabric first.

Best Press and similar sprays give starch-like body without flaking and are what most quilters press with; a tailor's clapper or wooden pressing tool sets seams flatter than an iron alone.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best pins for quilting?

Fine glass-head pins, 0.5 mm, long enough to catch two layers — the glass head survives the iron. Magic Pins Patchwork and Clover Flower Head pins are the usual choices.

Which marking tool washes out reliably?

Water-erasable pens and Chaco chalk liners. Heat-erasable pens are convenient but can reappear in cold; test them first.

Do you stock replacement blades for seam rippers?

Seam rippers are sold complete; Havel's and Kai snips and scissors are listed here with replacement rotary blades under cutting tools.
