Serger and overlock needles
Serger needles differ from household needles in shank length and groove, and using the wrong system is the single most common cause of serger skipped stitches. This page lists ELx705 (the long-shank system with a second groove used by many Baby Lock, Brother, Janome, Elna, Juki and Pfaff sergers, including the ELx705 SUK ballpoint for knits), DCx1 (used by many Singer, White, Kenmore and older Brother sergers) and BLx1, from Schmetz, Organ and Klasse, plus household-system needles for sergers whose manual specifies 130/705 H.

Your manual names the system; if it is lost, the model's page under Machines often states it where the distributor's data does. Sizes run 11/75 for lightweight knits to 14/90 and 16/100 for fleece and denim.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use regular needles in my serger?
Only if the manual says 130/705 H. Many sergers take ELx705 or DCx1, which seat at a different height; a household needle in those will skip.
ELx705 or ELx705 SUK?
SUK is the ballpoint version for knits, lycra and swimwear. Standard ELx705 for wovens and general serging.
