Universal needles
The universal needle has a slightly rounded point that sews most woven fabrics and many stable knits, which is why machines ship with one fitted. This page collects universal needles from Schmetz, Organ, Klasse, Singer and Brother in the household 130/705 H system (also printed as 15x1 or HAx1) in sizes from 60/8 for sheers to 120/19 for heavy canvas, as single-size packs, assorted packs and bulk boxes.
Products
Choose the size by the fabric and thread: 70/10 for lightweight cotton and voile, 80/12 for quilting cotton and shirting, 90/14 for denim and twill, 100/16 for canvas. A universal is a compromise by design — for dense twill, true knits, leather or microfibre, the dedicated point types sew better.
Frequently asked questions

15x1 is the system (shank standard); universal is the point type. A universal 80/12 in 130/705 H / 15x1 is the needle most household machines use.
What size universal needle for everyday sewing?
