Tension assemblies

Complete upper-thread tension units — discs, release pin, spring, dial and check spring as one assembly — plus individual discs and dials, listed by the models they fit. A tension unit that will not hold a setting, releases unevenly with the presser foot, or has discs grooved by years of thread is the cause of tension that drifts between seams and of loops that appear on one side no matter how the dial is set. Replacing the assembly is quicker and more reliable than rebuilding it, and on most machines it is one screw.

Before ordering, rethread with the presser foot up and clean between the discs with a folded piece of fabric; thread caught behind a disc is the most common tension fault and costs nothing to fix.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know the tension unit is faulty and not the threading?

Rethread with the foot up, clean between the discs, and test on two layers of cotton with contrasting thread. If the stitch still cannot be balanced by the dial, the unit is worn.

Is the check spring included?

On most complete assemblies yes; the specification table states what is included.
