What this part does

The needle plate (also called the throat plate or stitch plate) is the metal plate the fabric rests on. It has the needle hole, slots for the feed dogs and often etched seam guides. Needle strikes leave burrs around the hole that snag thread and fabric, which is the usual reason to replace it.

How to tell if this is the right one

A needle plate must match the feed-dog spacing and the needle hole position of the machine. Use the model list; a plate from a similar-looking machine may not line up with the feed dogs. If a listing says 'straight stitch', the hole is a small round one for straight sewing only — do not use a zigzag stitch with it fitted.

Signs you need this part

Burrs or a rough edge around the needle hole, fabric being pushed down into the hole, skipped stitches on fine fabric, or a plate that is bent or cracked from a needle strike.

Fitting it

Remove the retaining screws (usually two) or press the release lever, lift the old plate, clean the feed dog area and fit the new plate. Turn the handwheel by hand to confirm the needle clears the hole before sewing.
