What this part does

The needle plate (also called the throat plate or stitch plate) is the metal plate the fabric rests on. It has the needle hole, slots for the feed dogs and often etched seam guides. Needle strikes leave burrs around the hole that snag thread and fabric, which is the usual reason to replace it.
