What this part does

A buttonhole foot has a sliding frame or a button holder that measures the buttonhole length and feeds evenly over the dense satin stitching. One-step buttonhole feet take the button in a clamp at the back; sliding feet use markings on the frame. The foot holds the fabric flat against the feed dogs while the needle passes through; using the foot designed for the job is the difference between fighting the fabric and letting the machine do the work.
